Our standards
Ethics, morals, and values
- We view the world for what it is.
- We recognize universal human rights and civil rights.
- We recognize international law, while also acknowledging criticism of international law.
- We recognize war crimes and genocide—and potential for these atrocities—when declared by human rights organizations, international law groups, and/or genocide scholars; and, where appropriate, call it as such.
- We stand against hate and dehumanization.
Our editorial approach
- We aim to provide a healthy, well-rounded picture of what's happening at the moment with the goal for context and clarity for readers.
- We will practice accuracy and fairness in independent journalism, without bias, prejudice, or outside influence.
- We aim to do no harm. We will practice sensitivity regarding those we cover, and prioritize reader understanding.
- We will practice accountability of those in power and influence.
- We will try to counter misinformation and disinformation.
- We will issue corrections as needed.
Our sources
Links and content in curation
- We believe in transparency and accessibility. We want for everyone to access what we're reading. We want to help readers learn more.
- We believe in giving proper credit. We will link to each source in our curation.
- We will prioritize primary sources.
- We will try to avoid paywalls except when the reporting is an exclusive. We will opt for free and accessible reports when we can.
- We will aim to have a variety of English sources from around the world, including diverse voices and publications. We will link to non-English content when possible and necessary.
On artificial intelligence
- We believe in expert human curation and journalism work.
- We will not use AI to do our curation work.
- We will not use AI to write or compile our articles.
- We may use digital automated translation for non-English content. (We understand these tools may have flaws, and we'll address issues as needed.)
- We may use limited digital tools to check for spelling or grammar in the place of an editor. (Financially support us so we can pay for an editor.)
On privacy and security
- We believe in privacy and security for all. We believe in transparency.
- We won't collect more than necessary information from subscribers and members.
- We will try to use open-source and secure platforms in our operations.
- We are utilizing Ghost for our website and CMS; Proton for email and documents; Outpost and Plausible for audience engagement and analytics.
Our independence
Finances and conflicts of interest
- We are an independent news publication funded by subscribers.
- We will not let any followers, subscribers, members, or other funders dictate our independent coverage.
- We will disclose any possible conflicts of interest in our content.
- We will clearly indicate when a piece of content is financially supported.
